What is Crochet?
During the lockdown, many of us turned to new hobbies to pass the time of being locked indoors. I know for me, I picked up a new craft to challenge myself and stay busy. Crocheting became my new hobby.
Many may wonder what crochet is and why it’s a craft that has resurfaced. Make sure to keep reading to learn more about crochet and why it’s a craft anyone can pick up.
1. What is Crochet?
The first question many ask is “what is crochet?” Crochet is the handicraft of using one hook with yarn. Many confuse crochet with knitting but the major difference is using one hook, while knitting uses two needles. You can create various patterns by looping yarn over the hook. Evidence of crocheting has been dated back to the 19th century! The art of crocheting has developed over the past few hundred years but the skills are still the same.
2. What Can you Make?
In a time where we can just go buy a knit blanket or sweater, people are still crocheting. You can make almost anything with some yarn and a hook. People have created various patterns for others to follow so you can make your sweater or make a blanket for someone special in your life. There is also a subcategory of crochet called “Amigurumi” where you can even make stuffed animals or your favorite Pokemon. If you are just starting with crochet, starting with a smaller project will be best. You can make a baby blanket or even a crochet beanie as the weather cools. You can make almost anything your heart desires with the craft of crochet.
3. Materials
When it comes to starting a crochet project, you need to first decide the project you want. From there the pattern will tell you what type of yarn you will need and the size hook. You can go to your local craft store to pick up the supplies, and many times, your craft store will have coupons so you won’t have to break the bank. If you are just starting, a bigger hook will be easier to maneuver, along with a thicker yarn. Using a bigger hook, and thicker yarn your project will build up quickly. As you get more comfortable with crocheting you can try different materials of yarn like cotton, or even a whool. Your first project may not be the prettiest but thats ok! You will learn what works for you best as you crochet, and the more you do it the better you will become. Crochet is about having fun, and creating something you love.
Go and Crochet
The art of crochet is for anyone, all you need is some yarn and a hook. If you are working on smaller projects, you can take them with you as you travel. Crocheting passes the time and you will have that sense of accomplishment when you finish your project. For me, crocheting keeps me busy and off my phone. In a world of technology, going back to a basic art form is a great way to detatch from the internet and social media around us.
